Chapter Fourteen

I’d been pacing in my room for over an hour, but I finally collapsed into the armchair and stared at the door. I hadn’t found Olivia anywhere in the mansion and the professors had started urging everyone into their rooms. The kittens weren’t in their playful mood, instead huddling in a corner to most likely speak to one another telepathically about the student who had been found dead.

I drummed my fingers on the arm of the chair and tried to calm my racing mind. Olivia was going to be okay. She was going to be safe. She was going to walk through that door. I recited those words over and over to myself.

It was as if I had conjured her with a spell. The door creaked open and Olivia appeared, jumping when she saw me leap out of my seat. She was out of uniform, wearing a grey hoodie and yoga pants. She looked like she’d been out for a jog this whole time, her hair dripping with sweat.

“Harper, what are you doing awake? It’s so late.”

I ignored her question and hugged her tightly, trying as hard as I could to ignore the sweaty stench coming off her. She froze in surprise and then cautiously placed her hands on my back, patting reassuringly.

“I thought you were dead. I couldn’t sleep until I knew you were okay.”

She pushed me back and arched an eyebrow. “What in the world would make you think that?”

I took a deep breath and realized I was shaking from nerves. “I overheard two professors saying that a student here at the academy was found dead; mauled actually. I came over as soon as I heard about it.”

“They announced that to everyone? Who found the body?”

I grabbed her arms to steady her. “I don’t know who found the student, but they’re keeping it a secret. Can you believe that, Olivia? They’re going to try to hide this from everyone.”

Her face was stone, serious and calculating something in her head. “Maybe you misheard, Olivia. Or maybe it was a prank. This school is one of the safest places in the country. They have perfected their safety enchantments over hundreds of years.”

I gaped at my roommate and I realized the kittens were staring at us.

“I didn’t mishear. The kittens lead me to that conversation. They say whatever killed the girl is the reason they’ve appeared at the school.”

Olivia glanced at the kittens and I saw resentment was still in her gaze. She still wasn’t over losing them so quickly. “Like I said, the grounds are protected by powerful magic, Harper. Nothing can get in unless it is invited in.”

“So another student could have invited something in that killed that girl?”

Olivia rolled her eyes. “Now you’re just being ridiculous. There’s no reason a student here would do that. Let’s just go to bed, okay?”

Without another word, Olivia brushed past me and grabbed her pajamas to change into. The bathroom door slammed hard behind her and I was left standing there, utterly confused.
